Dr. Chad Koyanagi has an innovative approach for helping the homeless population.  He takes his practice to the streets.   FHCAAA (aka FLEF) member Dr. Chad Koyanagi is the only street psychiatrist in Hawaii today who goes out day after day, sometimes into the night, to bus stops and the sidewalk hangouts of Hawaii's most vulnerable homeless - the severely mentally ill.

Dr. Koyanogi's approach to this difficult problem is innovative and shows true dedication to the community.  Read the attached Civil Beat article to learn more about the ground breaking practice.

Mahalo Chad for your dedication to serving the at risk community in Hawaii.

On Thursday May 10, 2018 the 5th graders on the Barbers Point Elementary School track team received a donation of new track shoes from the FBI Honolulu Citizens Academy Alumni Association.  The boys and girls were so excited to receive their cool new shoes as you can see in the attached photos.

This is a community service post.  Thanks to FHCAAA (aka FLEF) member Melissa Pavlicek for the information.

In commemoration of National Police Week, the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation (www.hlemf.org) will hold its annual Memorial Service at the Hawaii Law Enforcement Memorial on May 13, 2018, starting promptly at 5:30 p.m. and concluding approximately at 6:30 p.m.

Opening Ceremonies will include music by the Royal Hawaiian Band, followed by a multi-agency color guard, a keynote speaker, Honor Roll Call, interspersed by select passages by four HPD Chaplains, and finally taps.

Your attendance in honor of Hawaii’s 65 fallen law enforcement officers is greatly appreciated.

Please pass this on to your colleagues and other community leaders as well as those who we may have missed.

    Best Regards,
    Tommy

On April 20, 2018, a group of 57 remarkable individuals gathered at FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C. to receive the 2017 FBI Director's Community Service Award.  FBI Director Christopher Wray presented the award.  Among the recipient's was FLEF's own Dr. Edison Miyawaki.  Dr. Miyawaki, or just "Doc" as he is widely known, has been a steadfast supporter of not only FLEF but just about every major community improvement activity in Hawaii.

Please join the FHCAAA (aka FLEF) Board of Directors and the local FBI division in congratulating Doc on this very special and well deserved recognition.

The intent of the 2018 FHCAAA (aka FLEF) member survey was to gauge the level of satisfaction FLEF members had with the organization.  All respondents were either Very Satisfied, Satisfied or Neutral about FLEF.  A strong 43% of members participated in the survey.

The survey also provided an opportunity for members to volunteer for various subcommittees whose purpose is to provide more grass root feedback to the FHCAAA Board of Directors.  Based on this broad feedback, we have started the process of forming our subcommittees.  We hope to have our initial planning meeting later this month.

All active FLEF members are welcome to participate in the committee process regardless of whether you completed a survey or not.

We will be sending out more information on the committees shortly.  In the meantime, if you have questions in this area you can contact either Signe Godfrey (signegodfrey@gmail.com) or Jason Fujihara (jason@techcare-hi.biz).

You may direct any questions about the survey to me.

    Mahalo,

    Al Ogata

All the evidence led to the University of Hawaii’s West Oahu campus, to a field that appeared to contain a shallow grave. Taking direction from their FBI mentor, two teams of young investigators began to excavate the site, using trowels and soft brushes, working methodically until the freshly exposed earth revealed the outlines of a skull.

For the students from two different high schools, the hands-on dig was part of a mock kidnapping case they were investigating, and the culmination of a yearlong introduction to the FBI and the workings of the criminal justice system. For Special Agent Arnold Laanui, the exercise capped another successful year for the FBI Honolulu Division’s Adopt-a-School program—and it reaffirmed his passionate belief that one of the best ways to reduce crime in at-risk communities is to provide the right educational opportunities for young people.
